cause of our reconfinement in close quarters is the discovery of the escape of an Lieut Col named Brewery who must have escaped before I was with the other officers as I never saw him.
June 30
I have been quite sick for several days with fever & dysentery, have not had any medicine, could not get it am yet confined to my bed. The monotony of the prison is only changed by a more rigorous rule each day, doors even inside ones closed windows will probably will probably be closed in a day or two. All news are excluded, but I suppose it is favorable to the Confederates as we are not allowed to hear it, even Yankee papers are excluded, but by accident we sometimes gain news, the last we have is that Genl Lee’s Army is in possession of the Capitol of Pennsylvania and fears are [intertained?] for the safety of Philadelphia, I hope success will [crown over arms?] or our situation will be pitiable indeed, we are gradually deprived of the chance to obtain little comforts, today we cannot write even a message to the Genl to make a request. God only knows what restrictions will come next

Fuller concludes letter 6 by assuming the reason for confinement of the officers is due to the escape of another prisoner, Lieutenant Colonel Brewery. He states that he is sick with fever and dysentery, and mentions the continued challenges to receive news. Multiple restrictions to the prisoners' freedom are added daily. There is news of General Lee's army possessing Pennsylvania.

Fort Delaware June 24th 1863
Mrs Mary B Fuller St Martinsville La
Dear Wife-
I have ommitted to write for over two days- as I had nothing of importance to write, but we were returned to the Fort yesterday and closely confined- there is about 104 men in one room about, 65 feet long & 32 feet wide as near as I can guess.
The rations was half of a small loaf of Bread yesterday with a small piece of meat about 2 or 3 ounces, with a cup of Coffee. This morning when called to breakfast it consisted of a cup of coffee, and nothing else, some had saved part of their bread I had a small piece as I make a rule to always keep part until I get more however hungry I may be. We are very much crowded, but if we do not get Sickness among us I shall be well Satisfied with the change as our food is probably cooked with water as clean as can be had. I had no heart to eat, where we were before, I daily gave more than half of my rations to others, the idea that the water that our cooking was done with, was pumped up just where four thousand men had to evacuate themselves, was too revolting for a man endure until starvation drove him to disregard it-

Army near Harrisburg.
The evening has arrived the discipline has been made more rigorous, I was prohibited from looking out of the window, yesterday and today I have tried to save part of my rations and give it to a hungry man, although hungry myself it gave me pleasure to give part to some one more hungry than myself, their looks of gratitude as they pass me pays me an hundred fold, they cannot speak to me and I have to give them even a piece of bread that has been weighed out to me clandestinely. Why this is made necessary I cannot tell I intend these 4000 strangers from every state in the Confederacy, shall all know me as a friend.
June 20th
This morning before daylight I was aroused by the report of a musket, one of the Sentinells fired at one of the prisoners for a trivial offense, he missed the man shot at and wounded another in the neck, barely missing the main artery- I will be glad when the privates prisoners are removed, as their numbers alarm the Federals and render acts of useless tyranny frequent these are liable to provoke an outbreak at any moment, if a leader should give the word enough would respond to make the movement serious.

Mrs Mary B Fuller, St Martinsville La
June 19th 1863, at Fort Delaware War Prison
Dear Wife
The Pennsylvanians are [convulsed?] with fear at the threatened invasion of the state the paper of the 16 & 17 appeal franticly for the people to turn out to defend the State, I do not think that our Genls will seriously attempt to invade the North at present, it has been the policy of our government to act on the Defensive, it is my opinion, that one hundred thousand men well handled in the North could do more to bring peace in thirty days than five times the number on our own soil in two years- bring the bitter cup to their own lips, march through the country treating property as the Federals treat it South, not remain in any place to occupy & hold- but move & destroy until the people of the North want peace. We were released from close confinement yesterday at one Oclock and are again in the barracks. There appears much sickness among our private Soldiers held as prisoners, several die daily really worn out by hard usage want & neglect.
Our companions have been much alarmed at our close confinement, at one time a rescue and seizure of the Fort was proposed and if attempted it would have been accomplished but more prudent Counsels prevailed, for which I am glad as many lives would have been lost, they could have held the Fort as long as supplies lasted but in the end would have been compelled to surrender, we could not have fought our way through the country for want of arms if armed we might have joined Lees-

The Genl construed this as showing a bad spirit and ordered us into close confinement, we are again in the same room I last occupied.
17th
Wednesday 11 Oclock A.M. up to this time we have had nothing to eat since yesterday, there was in the room some crusts of bread which I left day before yesterday these I have managed to eat, & with water have allayed hunger to some extent, I cannot think it is the intention of the Officers to torture us with hunger but the neglect to give us supper or breakfast looks like it. We are truly in the hands of either cruel or thoughtless men. I feel that this treatment will cause attempts of escape by the men & officers who are not in close confinement. It will render them desperate and produce exactly what the Genl intends to prevent.
2 P.M. something has just been brought for us to eat, the officer says it was a mistake that we were not fed sooner the time wears off tediously.
18th
We are now conscious of the cause of our close confinement, the Confederates are threatening Pennsylvania, which is thrown into a terrible panick lest they may receive retaliation for the outrageous destruction of property [South?] by the Federals, 11 A.M. Maj Barton Second Officer in command has just called in to see us and to inquire the cause of our close confinement, we informed him what we knew, he promises that we shall be returned to our companions.
Affectionately, your husband

I hope for the honor of the Government it is the latter, gnawing hunger is our companion, another abuse is that the water for cooking is taken within a few feet say 40 or 50, of the necessary used by four or five thousand men, the current washing the filth from the Sink to the kitchen pump. I have read in novels of similar arrangements but never supposed I would see the reality in America- There is a feeling of uneasiness among the Confederate Officers, lest the attempt to organize negro regiments will finally end in execution of Prisoners of War and finally that We Will be Shot or hanged in retaliation I cannot entirely dispel the unpleasant thought as I have since childhood always had a fear that I was born to be hanged I pray God to avert this and if I am to be killed but let it be in battle like a soldier.
4 Oclock P.M. I am again in close confinement, about an hour ago a Corporal came to our quarters, and called for Col Banter Smith of 4th Tennessee Cavalry, Maj. J. B. Thompson of Genl Morgans Cavalry, & for Capt Fuller, with orders for us to go the Genls office where we were conducted, as soon as we were ushered into the Genls presence he addressed Col Smith in regard to Confederate officers having threatened to disregard their parole, it appears that before I was sent down to the quarters that the officers had observed the situation [of?] the kitchen pump, and had drawn up a remonstrance giving notice of withdrawal of Parole unless the evil was remedied but they finally concluded not to send the remonstration & tore up the paper

soldiers, two small crackers & about two ounces of meat, for dinner & supper, about the same for breakfast- my God talk of short rations in the Confederacy you have no idea there what it means, we are promised better treatment but I am informed that every change has been for the worse. My situation is not so good as when up in the Fort, but I have company good warm hearted friends I feel much relieved & if I continue well will not complain. This afternoon a large party of Confederate prisoners arrived here I judge there is now nearly five thousand at this place they are ragged & dirty but look as if they would fight well if they had a chance. Their treatment will make them bitter, if they are exchanged, the Federals are making a great mistake in their policy.
June 16, another day is passing away- I have nothing of particular importance to note except the bad arrangements for feeding the prisoners, a large part will not receive their breakfast, before one O clock P.M. if then. The breakfast furnished the officers was a cup of coffee not worthy the name about two ounces of salt beef and two small crackers, about an ounce each, when I had swallowed mine I did not feel that I had commenced, whether this is the supply furnished by the government or our allowance is reduced by some peculation [illegible word] I do not know-

Mrs Mary B Fuller St Martinsville La
Dear Wife
Another day has come June the 15th 1863. I am not very well but not really sick, I slept tolerably well and this morning am up and have looked over part of my clothes to clean them of the Lice this will be daily labor for me so long as I am in a room that has light sufficient, yesterday I felt hope of better treatment revive, when I found myself transferred to a good room with light, but this morning I feel depressed as if something unpleasant was impending over me- I suppose it is the uncertainty of my fate and my ignorance why I am treated to close confinement when the other Confederate officers are allowed so much more liberty- if I am permitted I will record daily what happens to me, Oh if I only knew, what the reason is that I am so closely confined- I have never contemplated escape until [regularity?] released----2 P.M. at 11 Oclock this morning, an officer came into my room with an order for me to repair immediately to the Generals office which I did, after a few simple questions he gave the order for me to be quartered with the other officers- with the same fare- I am now in barracks with the rest it is a mere camp crowded & filthy the water is bad & rations barely enough to sustain life- I was sorry today to see the scanty allowance to our private soldiers

Fuller opens letter 4 by commenting on his health and trying to rid his clothes of lice. He doesn't know why he is kept in close confinement while other officers have more freedom. At 11 am, he was ordered to the General's office. He was ordered to be quartered with the other officers. He complains about the bad water and small rations.

are confined and sentenced to be shot in four or five days. I am informed that they attempted to desert from the Army, even this change was a relief to me as there was light and company. Several Confederate officers were in adjoining rooms and as they had the privilege of passing by the door I could see sympathizing friends, although I could not talk with them- in about an hour, a preacher came in to read and pray with my poor room mates he did not forget to pray for me, soon after he left an officer came and directed the Confederate officers to move which they did with alacrity I thought they were off to be exchanged but I now believe they were moved to other and better quarters outside the Fort. Soon after I was removed to a room which some of those officers occupied it is a pleasant room, for a prison, with an outside window, looking out across water with beautiful rolling or hilly land in the distance which seems covered with farms also a village in sight, the landscape resembles the [Cote Gilla?] Prairie Hills back of St Martinsville but it cannot compensate for liberty, but as my condition has been improved I put my trust in God and hope revives that I may yet be again restored in honor to my Wife and children.
God bless you,
Affectionately

seven or eight thousand shots were fired at me. I escaped, again when I was blown up on the Queen of the West, five hundred pounds of gun powder and nearly an hundred shells exploding just under my feet, as I was ascending enveloped with fire I breathed a prayer to God for Protection. I was saved, when driven from the deck of the boat by the scorching flames I fell into the lake as I was falling and as I plunged under the Wheel of the boat again I called [out upon?] God, when I rose with an arm broke and my left leg disabled, I felt that truly my time was out, I then prayed for you and my children, as well as for myself I had my left arm and right leg to swim with in a raging lake where breakers were running nearly ten feet high but God brought me up whenever I sank until finally I was drifted to a small plank that sustained four other men, this saved me also, until taken up by the Federal boats but in all these scenes I have not felt myself so utterly dependent upon God alone as during the last twenty four hours. Prayer that was heartfelt, but coupled with doubt and despair was the outpouring of my heart. Sometime this morning probably about ten oclock, I was conducted to another room- where two poor fellows

even while writheing with the pain of wounds received from Union bullets, hoped that the Union would yet be reestablished, not by force but by an honorable compromise that would secure the rights of all, but the treatment I am now receiving is rooting out my love and respect for the Government of the United States, I see we are different people, with different ideas and different Standards of justice, the South is hot blooded, but in the main just, no man would have been treated there as I have been treated under the same circumstances. Captain Cox, and Connally of the 21st Indiana Regiment, who I myself made prisoners, escaped from Camp Pratt and were recaptured at Donaldsonville, when they came under my charge again, were fed at my own table and furnished with shoes & clothing by my officers who divided their scanty stock with them and they were well treated until exchanged, but I have digressed from my narrative - -
A cheerless night, I passed in a dark and lousy dungeon, I had hardly laid down when I felt the vermin cralling over me, but day came at last. from Fortress Monroe for Fort Delaware where we Safely arrived after 24 hours [more?]. While coming up Delaware Bay & river I was struck with the great number of vessels in sight, scarcely less than fifty being in sight at a time & this was continued all the way up I did not count them but think we met or passed over two hundred in fifty miles. Upon arrival at Fort Delaware I was surprised and pained at being informed by Genl Schoupe the officer in command that he should keep me in close confinement, it seemed as if my heart sank within me he did not say why this peculiar disposition is made of me or how long it will continue. He seemed to avoid giving me an opportunity to ask him any questions.
I was about an hour afterward, conducted to a room which was in reality a dungeon having no window and but one door with two small holes cut through it- this afforded air but very little light. When locked in there I felt my only hope was in God and the succor that he may give to the Confederate Cause- - You know how dearly I loved the United States and with what reluctance I gave up the Union after Secession was an accomplished fact. I have ever since

Fuller continues letter 3 describing their arrival at Fort Delaware within 24 hours of departure. He discusses his amazement at the number of vessels in Delaware Bay. Upon arrival, Fuller was informed by General [Shoupe?] that he was to be kept in close confinement in a room he describes as a dungeon. He reminds Mary of how much he had loved the United States, only reluctantly giving up his allegiance in response to secession.

two other officers besides & several of the boats crew were also sent for I was the last one that had an audience with Col Ludlow, who made inquiries as to the cause of the escapade, if it was not caused by negligent guarding &c, of this I could give but little information as I had not been consulted in the matter until it was over, but it was my opinion that it was caused by a change of destination with the report that Confederate Officers are not to be exchanged but to be held and executed in retaliation for Negroes and their Officers, should the Confederate Government execute them when captured our officers nearly all believe that officers in command of Negro Soldiers will be shot or hanged if captured this made them desperate and reckless.
Col Ludlow informed me that I should be exchanged among the first officers exchanged and if an exchange was not soon effected that he would try and obtain permission for me to go to Mothers in Ohio to remain there until I am exchanged or released, he ordered me to be relieved of close confinement which was done and I was allowed the same Liberty that other prisoners were allowed while on the boat, - At 2 o’clock on the 12 inst we started again

Mrs Mary B Fuller St Martinsville La-
Dear Wife & children-
My last letter informed you that I had staid on board of the Federal Steamer Maple Leaf when I had an opportunity to leave her. Well to resume my narrative. The Captain disregarded his oath to the Confederate Officers and returned directly to Fortress Monroe, that same night putting me in close confinement, while on the way and for a time insisting upon having me ironed, I appealed to the Federal Officer who finally upon my promise not to leave the room assigned me refused to have me ironed- for this I thank him- although I have forgotten his name if I ever heard it. Upon arrival at Fortress Monroe about Midnight or a little before, the transaction was reported and steps taken to recapture the fugitive Officers with what success I have not learned but conclude that they made their escape as I have not heard from them up to this time. On the next day the eleventh of June, I was sent on shore into Fortress Monroe to report to Col Ludlow, who is the Officer that arranges exchanges of prisoners,

plan of the Yankee Captain, upon the Condition that he should swear to proceed directly on his voyage to Fort Delaware and not report what had happened until his arrival there, this would have given them one full day before the Federals would have known of the transaction. The Yankee guard was paroled and left on the boat, the Confederates to the number of 70 landed, 27 remaining on board. I concluded to remain on board and go to Fort Delaware although warmly urged to accompany the party; but having been well treated up to that time, and not being able to endure much fatigue or to make a quick march I concluded to remain and trust to honorable treatment by the Federals, not doubting that as my stay was voluntary and in opposition to the wishes of the Confederates that I should be well treated and allowed as much liberty as any other Confederate Officer who was a prisoner of War, but I made a grievous mistake that may be fatal to me in the end my trust is in God good bye.
afectionately,
Your Husband

Fuller concludes letter 2, relating the rest of the incident aboard the Steamer Maple Leaf. The other part of the agreement with Captain Youngblood was that he was to continue on to Fort Delaware, and was not to inform the Federal forces of the incident until then. This was agreed upon, and 70 of the Confederate prisoners landed, leaving 27 on board. Fuller was urged to go with the party but didn't feel up to the journey and remained on board, noting that it might have been a fatal mistake.

I hardly knew what to do, or think in five minutes a number of the Confederates, came to me and insisted that I should take charge of the boat, this I consented to do, so far as to carry out what they should determine upon, - They held a conference with the Yankee Captain of the Boat, who agreed that if they would not destroy his boat that he would do his best to navigate the boat to any point on the Coast they should select at the same time advising them to land on the Virginia Shore ten miles below Cape Henry Light House, as that was the only place where they could land on the main land for two hundred miles and that the enemies gun boats were all a long the Coast at [short?] intervals, he informed them it was only 30 miles to Elizabeth City that the Confederates were there and that there was no Federals in the way- after consultation it being apparent that the boat had no provisions or coal for more than two days if for so long they concluded to adopt the

River emties, this seemed to indicate that we were to be exchanged and filled every heart with pleasure. We were transferred to the Steamer Utica upon which we remained one day & night, when we were transferred, to the Steamer Maple Leaf. I should have stated that my health was much improved I found the Sea Air refreshing and in three or four days quite cold indeed so as too make heavy clothes comfortable, but to resume, after being transferred to the Maple Leaf we steamed to Norfolk Va, where we took on board 49 Confederate Officers who were prisoners there, and returned to Fortress Monroe. We anchored and laid over night, we were finally ordered to Fort Delaware a fortress in Delaware River about 30 miles from Philadelphia. We started on the afternoon of the 10 of June and steamed about 25 miles, when a portion of the prisoners overpowered the guard and seized the boat.
I was not of the party and had not been informed of the plan, until the minute it was executed, when Capt [Young Blood] called me into his state room and told me certain parties contemplated the movement, declaring his opposition to it and requested me to speak to some of them on the subject, while he was talking --

Dear Wife-
On the 3rd of June I left New Orleans in company with 49 other Confederate Officers Old [Le Clair?] Fuseliers being one of them as we thought for New York on the Steamer Catawba, the Sixth Regiment New York Volunteers Col Wilson being our escort.
We were treated while on that boat as Gentlemen, both by Officers & Men, they endeavored to make us feel that they had hearts & consciences. Our voyage was pleasant and quick but instead of going to New York we went to Fortress Monroe which is near the entrance of Chesapeake Bay into which the Potomac

I was very sick for two weeks high fever for eight days my skin became as yellow as an orange, or [brass?]. I do not know whether I had Yellow Fever or Jaundice. I had no doctor those I know not being in the City.
I was supplied with bed & bed clothes, a pair of pantaloons, some shirts & drawers by Mrs Brandt, Presidentess of the Ladies Society for the relief of needy Confederate prisoners of War. God bless [them & her?], had it not have been for their Charity, I should have suffered indeed, as I had only the clothes which I had on when blown up on The Queen of the West.
The prisoners confined with me were daily supplied with two good meals from the Brooks House kept by a Mr Brooks this was a donation by him, after being sick several days I received a note from Mrs Brooks accompanied by a nice bowl of Chicken Soup. She requested me to send to her for anything I kneeded, this kindness coupled with the name, iinduced me to direct the Servant a Smart Milatto fellow, to inquire of Mrs Brooks if she had any relations at Marietta Ohio, he replied to me that he had often heard them speak of [illegible] Harmer, the servant bore my message to Mr Brooks, who replied that he knew [you?] and all [about?] me that I must come and stay a few days with him and he would talk with

Mrs Mary B Fuller
Dear Wife you are aware of what happened to me up to the time I arrived in New Orleans. My left foot and ancle was badly injured by the explosion on the Queen of the West. My right arm was also fractured at the place where it was broken by a shot on the 14 of January.
