The seats for the gymnasium are partially complete. Named for Fred Bohler, the nationally known WSU Coach and Director of Athletics who devoted forty-two years to physical education and sports at WSU. Bohler gym has played a significant role in the history of Cougar sports. Housing a basketball court, swimming pool handball courts and offices, it still has an important role in WSU athletics. This massive red brick building is ornamented with terra cotta and cut stone. The Renaissance Revival windows surrounded with alternating plain and broken pediments are surprisingly opulent. The original entrance with sculptural decoration faced west. The architect, Stanley Smith, was the second University architect. Between 1924 and 1947, he completed fourteen major buildings at WSU. One of its defining features, the Columbia River drainage system, further connects the region to southwestern Canada, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, and Nevada. Through its history, the Greater Columbia Plateau has experienced dramatic environmental, social, and cultural transformations. In this course we will explore two fundamental aspects of Columbia Plateau history: the nature of human interactions and the relationship between humans and the environment. Human interactions include migrations, the treatment of indigenous peoples, militarization, trans-national relations, the struggle between labor and capital, and the politics of inclusion and exclusion. Among the human-environmental relations we will emphasize are environmental degradation and rehabilitation, the perception and construction of (sometimes contending) cultural landscapes and senses of place, industrial agriculture, tourism, and water development. \r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nThis fall you will begin participation in a year-long hybrid seminar for graduate and undergraduate students that will explore the cultures and the environments of the Greater Columbia Plateau from multiple disciplinary points of view. We will begin by discussing different theories and methods for understanding regions and places before focusing on and developing the main subject areas for this first year: Plateau Cultural Landscapes, Making the Plateau Bloom, and the Atomic Plateau. During each three to four week period we will focus on readings related to these subject areas. We will have guests from various departments within the university (Sociology, English, Engineering, etc.) introduce their approaches to the region. We will make field trips to important sites (Walla Walla, Grand Coulee, and Hanford) for study and documentation. We will invite visiting scholars from outside the university to speak. \r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nBy the last weeks of this fall seminar and leading into the spring, we will begin to consider in more concrete ways how to organize a multi-tiered digital archive that includes the processing of Columbia Plateau-related collections within the WSU Manuscripts and Special Collections and ultimately the creation of a website that highlights these collections as well as the work that WSU faculty and students are doing and which is related to the Columbia Plateau. The spring seminar will therefore build on the expertise and understandings that we develop in the fall. By spring we will begin to put those understandings into action as part of a lasting project that will serve the general public and the WSU community for years to come."]]]],["element",{"elementId":"37"},["name","Contributor"],["description","An entity responsible for making contributions to the resource"],["elementTextContainer",["elementText",{"elementTextId":"99831"},["text","Trevor Bond (WSU)"]]]]]]]],["itemType",{"itemTypeId":"1"},["name","Document"],["description","A resource containing textual data. By spring we will begin to put those understandings into action as part of a lasting project that will serve the general public and the WSU community for years to come."]]]],["element",{"elementId":"37"},["name","Contributor"],["description","An entity responsible for making contributions to the resource"],["elementTextContainer",["elementText",{"elementTextId":"99831"},["text","Trevor Bond (WSU)"]]]]]]]],["itemType",{"itemTypeId":"6"},["name","Still Image"],["description","A static visual representation. Later he was City Engineer for Everett; construction engineer with the Union Pacific and the Spokane International for which he was in charge of constructing some 30 miles of railroad outside of Dawson City, Alaska; district engineer in Seattle; Superintendent of Streets and Sewers for Seattle; and finally (about 1921) City Engineer for Seattle under three different mayors. Hutchison was raised on a farm near Endicott, Washington. As a professional photographer, he later operated studios in: Endicott, LaCrosse, Pullman, and Moscow Idaho. In the course of his work as the photographer for the WSU yearbook, the Chinook, he attended many campus events such as dances, parties, fraternity and sorority dances, banquets, and teas. The campus of Washington State University (including campus architecture, sporting events, campus activities, and administrators) is extensively documented, as is the city of Pullman and the surrounding Palouse communities. The collection records the changes on the campus of WSU and in rural communities between the 1920s and the 1950s. Agricultural photographs trace the shift from the use of horses in harvesting to modern combines. New technologies are also represented: the arrival of the first model T, the introduction of electric washers and dryers. Though many of the photographs depict the town and farms of the Palouse region of southeastern Washington and northern Idaho, neighboring geographic areas are also represented."]]]],["element",{"elementId":"37"},["name","Contributor"],["description","An entity responsible for making contributions to the resource"],["elementTextContainer",["elementText",{"elementTextId":"99841"},["text","Alex Merrill (WSU)"]],["elementText",{"elementTextId":"99842"},["text","Trevor Bond (WSU)"]]]]]]]],["itemType",{"itemTypeId":"6"},["name","Still Image"],["description","A static visual representation.
