Hutchison was raised on a farm near Endicott, Washington. As a professional photographer, he later operated studios in: Endicott, LaCrosse, Pullman, and Moscow Idaho. In the course of his work as the photographer for the WSU yearbook, the Chinook, he attended many campus events such as dances, parties, fraternity and sorority dances, banquets, and teas. The campus of Washington State University (including campus architecture, sporting events, campus activities, and administrators) is extensively documented, as is the city of Pullman and the surrounding Palouse communities. The collection records the changes on the campus of WSU and in rural communities between the 1920s and the 1950s. Agricultural photographs trace the shift from the use of horses in harvesting to modern combines. New technologies are also represented: the arrival of the first model T, the introduction of electric washers and dryers. Though many of the photographs depict the town and farms of the Palouse region of southeastern Washington and northern Idaho, neighboring geographic areas are also represented."]]]],["element",{"elementId":"37"},["name","Contributor"],["description","An entity responsible for making contributions to the resource"],["elementTextContainer",["elementText",{"elementTextId":"99841"},["text","Alex Merrill (WSU)"]],["elementText",{"elementTextId":"99842"},["text","Trevor Bond (WSU)"]]]]]]]],["itemType",{"itemTypeId":"6"},["name","Still Image"],["description","A static visual representation. Map shows incorporated and unincorporated land, railways, interurban roads, principal roads, elevations, schools, and the Yakima Indian Reservation. The Ahtanum Irrigation District is marked in red.
Ahtanum Creek borders the north boundary of the Yakima [Yakama] Indian Reservation. Its waters supply irrigation for some 10,000 acres that make up the Ahtanum Irrigation District in Yakima County. The creek flows into the Yakima River, and at one time supplied salmon to a number of Native American fishing sites along its route. A number of settlers arrived in the region during the 1860s and 1870s. By 1871, the Ahtanum Creek was diverted through an irrigation ditch onto newly claimed farmlands and sped the growth of the town of North Yakima ( the name changed to Yakima in 1918) which incorporated in 1886. The Northern Pacific Railroad and Yakima Irrigation Company won right of way across the Yakima Indian Reservation (begun 1855) to construct an irrigation canal running through the reserved lands. The company's first project was the Sunnyside Canal. While it managed to outlast the Panic of 1893, the canal had lost the financial backing of the Northern Pacific during this time. Lack of funds and poor regulatory practices forced the people of Franklin, Benton, Kittitas and Yakima Counties to request government intervention. The United States Reclamation Service--begun in 1902 to oversee water projects in the West--agreed to take over the \"Yakima Project\" in 1905. Within five years it had regulated use, built diversion dams, and extended the Sunnyside canal. It was the first of many large projects the Reclamation Service installed in the west."]]]],["element",{"elementId":"49"},["name","Subject"],["description","The topic of the resource"],["elementTextContainer",["elementText",{"elementTextId":"24735"},["text","Yakima County--Maps
Indians of North America -- Northwest, Pacific -- Maps
Irrigation -- Washington (State) -- Yakima Indian Reservation--Maps
United States Reclamation Service
Ahtanum Creek"]]]],["element",{"elementId":"51"},["name","Type"],["description","The nature or genre of the resource"],["elementTextContainer",["elementText",{"elementTextId":"24736"},["text","Maps"]]]],["element",{"elementId":"38"},["name","Coverage"],["description","The spatial or temporal topic of the resource, the spatial applicability of the resource, or the jurisdiction under which the resource is relevant"],["elementTextContainer",["elementText",{"elementTextId":"24737"},["text","United States--Washington (State)--Yakima County"]]]],["element",{"elementId":"47"},["name","Rights"],["description","Information about rights held in and over the resource"],["elementTextContainer",["elementText",{"elementTextId":"24738"},["text","Contact Manuscripts, Archives, and Special Collections, for copyright information 509 335-6691"]]]],["element",{"elementId":"48"},["name","Source"],["description","A related resource from which the described resource is derived"],["elementTextContainer",["elementText",{"elementTextId":"24739"},["text","Manuscripts, Archives, and Special Collections, WSU Libraries"]]]],["element",{"elementId":"43"},["name","Identifier"],["description","An unambiguous reference to the resource within a given context"],["elementTextContainer",["elementText",{"elementTextId":"24740"},["text","WSU 156"]]]],["element",{"elementId":"42"},["name","Format"],["description","The file format, physical medium, or dimensions of the resource"],["elementTextContainer",["elementText",{"elementTextId":"24741"},["text","image/jpeg"]]]],["element",{"elementId":"37"},["name","Contributor"],["description","An entity responsible for making contributions to the resource"],["elementTextContainer",["elementText",{"elementTextId":"24742"},["text","Manuscripts, Archives, and Special Collections"]]]],["element",{"elementId":"44"},["name","Language"],["description","A language of the resource"],["elementTextContainer",["elementText",{"elementTextId":"24743"},["text","English"]]]]]]]],["item",{"itemId":"1741","public":"1","featured":"0"},["fileContainer",["file",{"fileId":"545"},["src","http://digitalexhibits.wsulibs.wsu.edu/files/original/httpcontentwsulibswsuedumapsimage195_17ee7cde9e.jpg"],["authentication","6036b24b843eaad4ae4777ce1473f748"],["elementSetContainer",["elementSet",{"elementSetId":"5"},["name","Omeka Image File"],["description","The metadata element set that was included in the `files_images` table in previous versions of Omeka. Agricultural photographs trace the shift from the use of horses in harvesting to modern combines.
