Tant in 1881. The plat was filed and the town incorporated in 1887, and was named by Tant after President James A. Garfield. Even before the plat was filed settlers began to build up the town. In 1883 the Giles Brothers built the first store there. One year later members constructed the Baptist Church. The Columbia and Palouse Railroad built a line in the area in 1885-86, and were soon followed by the Northern Pacific Railroad.
