Fort George formerly Astoria (1848)

Subject

Oregon -- Astoria -- Pictorial works.

Description

1 watercolor view: col., 20 x 31 cm.
This portrays Astoria, Oregon, during the year 1845.
Astoria was first settled in 1811, when members of the Pacific Fur Company established a Fort and a trading post there. In 1813, after the War of 1812, the Pacific Fur Company sold Fort Astoria to the Northwest Fur Company, who renamed it Fort George. However, over time the center of the British fur industry moved further inland, to Vancouver, Washington, and Fort George fell into relative disuse. After the British left, the Fort was renamed Astoria.
