Captain Henry Wirz

Captain Henry Wirz was the chief commandant of Andersonville. Wirz quickly became a target for Union commanders after the end of the war. Wirz was accused of conspiring with high confederate officials to “impair and injure the health and destroy the lives of federal prisoners”. Wirz was convicted of these crimes and hung in Washington D.C. in November of 1865. Wirz was one of the only confederate generals to be charged and executed for war crimes after the end of the war. Wirz’s execution speaks to the aftermath of theterror and suffrage that took place at Andersonville.
