Conclusion

Although people are still using posters, letters, and newspapers in modern day, propaganda is also being spread via other ways such as movies, television, and social media. However, during the Civil War, communications were mainly posters, letters, newspapers, and books. The power of the written (and sung) word for Civil War propaganda was extremely powerful. Northern states needed to believe in the superiority and justice of reuniting the nation, and Southern states needed to be encouraged to defend their ideals and their homeland. The posters, newspapers, and photos about the Civil War are very precious for today’s research in history and they allow us to look back at these attitudes and values with both a modern and historical lens.
